In 2008/9 was Jan Hendrik Brüggemeier the artistic co-director and co-initiator of the EU culture project “bauhaus lab”.

“bauhaus lab” is a international network of interdisciplinary laboratories on new artistic strategies and modes of interdisciplinary co-operations.

In full appreciation of the ideas behind the historical Bauhaus movement and their lasting impact on today’s affairs, the bauhaus lab project wants to further explore the present conditions for an innovative artistic practice across disciplines and national borders:

# where is the working place of the artist today?
# which are the interdisciplinary coalitions to be shared today and why?

With the support of the Culture programme of the European Union (2007- 2013) and on initiative of the Cultural Directorate of the City of Weimar, the bauhaus lab project is a co-operation between the following partners:

In the course of this project and in the frame of the 90th anniversary of the Bauhaus the results of the research are presented to the public in various formats and further collaborative co-operations with external partners will be fostered across Europe and beyond.

Besides the numerous activities of the project partners the contemporary scenography festival Crash!Boom!Bau! at the Theaterhaus Jena forms the flagship of the project co-operations.

The point of departure is the work of the theatre workshop at the Bauhaus school “Bauhaus Bühne” (bauhaus stage), that used to present his work in 1920ies at the city theatre of Jena (todays Theaterhaus Jena and location of the festival).

The festival wants to highlight contemporary scenography as the melting pot assembled out of diverse interdisciplinary artistic trends and drives.

From 2005 to 2006 Jan Brueggemeier co-ordinated the Heritage Radio Network.

The HRN was dedicated to cultural journalism and Internet-radio. To promote the rich diversity of European cultural heritage, the website has been set up. It served as syndication platform for the journalistic output of its network members and linking point between the different radio-stations.

Individual articles and interviews, the commonly produced HRN-magazines (online and on-air) as well as a dedicated HRN music stream were published. Working and publication language was English. The website offered to the HRN-editors an online working environment including a content management system for the publication (Typo 3), a WIKI engine for collaborative editorial work and real-time online chats for work co-ordination and discussion.

Independent Interactive Radio/Chat/Multi-Media Community

From 2001 to 2006 Jan Brueggemeier has been an audio/visual programme maker for DFM.

DFM is a free interactive radio/chat/multi-media community. Its main studio is located in Amsterdam. DFM has been a constant presence on the Dutch and international media scenes since the 1980s.

The programs have been transmitted live via the Internet and have been co-ordinated between various media-stations and platforms simultaneously.

Jan Brueggemeier is currently taking his sabbatical-year(s).

From 2000 – 2006 Jan Hendrik Brueggemeier has been founding member and one of the driving forces of the webcast band pingfm. has been a web based platform for audio/video experiments with impetus on live production of audio and video.

Throughout its active phase the members of pingfm were fascinated by three aspects of streaming and networked media: their low-bandwidth aesthetic, their global interaction and their potential to hybridise different media and spaces like club, theatre, concert, installation, radio, cinema and performance.

Back in those early days live audio/video streaming felt strangely anachronistic in comparison to the more general trend in digital production and its increasing high fidelity. Live-streaming instead meant to one had to:
a.) lower and reduce one’s sound and video quality and not to increase it and
b.) to face what ADILKNO had called “electronic loneliness” because online audiences were more diverse and at times more or less global but still rather marginal in terms of listener numbers.

In order to compensate for that pingfm organised live performances, festivals and conferences like the ping-in-progress-festival in Weimar (2001). pingfm was involved in the preparation and participated in the NO BORDER-Camp Radio in Strasbourg (2002). It received the Bauhaus University Award and participated in the online event series ‘Fusion’ organised by Jill Scott (aside others). It performed at the Webcastlounge at the ART Frankfurt (2001) organised by Station R.O.S.E. Together with Theaterhaus Weimar pingfm hosted the Sleep-Camp at the Kunstfest Weimar (2001). And together with the artist-duo radioqualia pingfm was topic of discussion on the empyre-mailinglist. In 2004 it participated in the Ars Electronica’s long night of radio-art, organised by the ORF Kunstradio.

pingfm was a member of the Dutch webcast station DFM rtv International, the British webcaster pirate TV and Radio Kinesonus, the Japanese platform for experimental sound. pingfm hosted a weekly 2hrs live show on DFM rtv International as well as 1 hr programme slot on the local FM radio.

Jan Hendrik Brueggemeier (*78/German) is a freelance artist and media producer and main chronicler of the project.

Jans’ artistic interests lay in sound art and spaces for communication in the city. He holds an MFA in Media Arts & Design from the Bauhaus University Weimar, where he graduated from the chair for Experimental Radio. He relocated from London, where he worked for the AA School of Architecture, to Melbourne to take on his Creative PhD at the Centre for Creative Arts at La Trobe University where he now resides.

In 2015 he completed his creative PhD in Media Arts (thesis: From Sound to Waves to Territories) at La Trobe University, Melbourne.

Besides his artistic practice in sound and media art, he always has been actively involved in the shaping and running of media networks and the curating of art festivals and exhibitions. His work has been shown internationally.

He recently has been the artistic co-director of the EU project “bauhaus lab 2009“, an international project network on contemporary interdisciplinary arts. He has co-curated the festival for new scenography CRASH!BOOM!BAU! at the Theaterhaus Jena. He has been artist-in-residency of the Cultural Foundations of Saxony and Thuringia.

In 2004 he graduated in Media Art & Design at the chair for Experimental Radio at Bauhaus University Weimar. Project: nEture.

HOW NETURE BEGUN … focuses mostly on collaborations and cross-disciplinary projects. It presents completed works and finished projects along with rather loose lines of associative and speculative thinking in a sketch book manner. Similar to the idea of the experimental seminarist Buckminster Fuller and his legendary dictum Thinking  Out  Loud.

One could picture the relational dimension of neture as the “changing states of aggregation” like in chemistry – when a setting or situation changes through the relational activity of its protagonists involved.  The “net” in neture clearly means less the “technical implications”, which dominate the notion of -let’s say- a “network” today. neture also includes to know the right moment when to leave the grid behind and drop offline.

And this is how neture begun …

My first meaningful struggle with this theme was in the summer of 2003, as I worked on an application for a project with Johannes Sienknecht. In this framework “n e t u r e” popped up for the first time as a project title.  “n e t u r e” was proposed as a project with the wish to abandon the trusted studio of the internet work place and to find places which could give a physical counterweight to the medium.

Here is a brief sample from our application:

“n e t u r e” wants to focus on the impulses and possible conceptual or aesthetic transfers of the mediafied spheres and physical spaces with a similar structure, and to document such processes. Where can one find the unused capacities in mediafied and physical spaces that allow “n e t u r e” to grow exuberantly and freely? Can one compare, e.g., redundantly laid telecommunication-cabling which private-persons can hire from telecoms for a cheaper rate to abandoned and vacant post-socialist tower-blocks in East-Germany, Hungary or post-industrial relics in Sheffield, UK? The focus and crux of the subject matter of “n e t u r e” are spaces with communication potentials, which are forgotten or no longer used, and spaces where less relevant conventional references exist (or are in the process of vanishing) between the place itself and its culture and history. “n e t u r e” uses this void, grows within it and creates dynamic presence in it with methods of art, communication and documentation. “n e t u r e” uses free space, communicates out of necessity, cooperates out of love, creates from passion, manifests from coincidence.

RASTE_02 – “DISTRIBUTED BY… – How do I get to the music and how does the music get to me?”

In 2004 Jan Brueggemeier was one of the core organisers and curator of Raste_02.

Raste_02 is a festival of new electronic music and audio art which opened in Weimar for the second time that year. It dealt with this question.

For the three days from 12th to 14th June 2004 in Weimar and Frankfurt am Main, Raste_02 combines readings and discussions with the experience of live, new, electronic music and audio art.

Raste_02 creates a forum for budding and established musicians and artists to present music concepts using an electronic sound space and its audio-visual implementation.

Raste_02 aims to be a communicative platform which discusses changes in the relationship between artist, market and audience resulting from digital media.


“Distributed by… – how do I get to the music and how does the music get to me?”

How do I get to the music – and how does the music get to me?
How can you find the music you really like?
Does technology always change music?
Is there any music which is not influenced by the fact that it can be recorded and copied?
Does music live through its continuous reproduction?
How can the value concept of music as a product be developed in a digital musical system?
Are physical storage media being increasingly marginalised?
Is there a digital pendant to a 500 series vinyl record?
Is the only thing of value something that cannot be copied?
Who founds a label and why?
Do labels act as a compass in the overgrown data jungle?
How does the label landscape change?
Are small labels more adventurous, more entertaining and more patient?
Does financial success spell creative disaster?
Can musicians cope with the new economic model of making music?
Is music driven out of its own studio so quickly that no file-sharing client can keep up?
Can music be sold in such attractive packaging that the purchase is easier than copying it?
Will self-publishing of music by the artist become the best form of publicity because an increasing number of people will go to concerts of those musicians, who keep their music in circulation?
Will live presentation of music become more popular?
Are there too many laptop artists?
Can electronics arbitrate between experts, hobbyists and independents?
How will the relationship between creative and interpretive art develop?
Will pure music agents with their networks and talent scouts become more and more important as the real artists of distribution?
What does the future look like for musicians?
What does a musician live from?

You can be sure the presentations, discussions and moderations during Raste_02 will reveal more questions. But maybe some answers can also be found without carrying on the powerful discourse bubble in the context of electronic music.

Crossing the borders, leaving the context: what happens when artists change their brush and easel with a soldering iron?

In 2002 Jan Hendrik Brueggemeier was core organiser and curator of Media above & beyond.

Media above & beyond was held in Weimar in July (12th – 19th) 2002  and was organised by,, with an active participation of international media practitioners, theorists and activists coming from:

  • Lo-Res (Vienna)
  • Tape-beatles (Prague)
  • Heath Bunting (Cube / Bristol)
  • Patrice Riemens (De Waag, The Center for Old and New Media / Amsterdam)
  • ASCII (Amsterdam)
  • Ilja Gerhart (EGO City / Zurich)
  • Joe Davis (MIT / Cambridge, USA)

The Conference continued later the same week at the NoBorder Camp, held in Strasbourg. The experiences and the shared knowledge were applied in supporting the media infrastructures temporarily organised for the NoBorder Camp. A radio-studio was set up with a FM transmitter and WLan access points, as well as internet-cafe with free internet and GNU/Linux powered computers. Geert Lovink, a media critic, and members of the Sarai New Media Collective from New Delhi – India, joined the conference participants to exchange experiences and establish a future co-operation in a newly created social network.

The conference was conceived context-wise of a follow-up in a series of similar meetings and conferences that proceeded in the last 3 years, such as Conncect Congress in Zurich, Tech2 in Bristol, ping-in-progress in Weimar, HAL-2001 (Hackers at Large) in Twente, ASU II – Art Servers Unlimited in Labin, Next 5 Minutes in Amsterdam. Our intention is to continue this way, connecting, supporting and creating international media networks, promoting Open Source software and spreading the concepts and knowledge of tactical media.

Media above & beyond made possible with the support of the Thuringian Ministry for Science, Research and Art, the Student Union of the Bauhaus University Weimar, the Experimental Radio Department of the Bauhaus University Weimar, and the art-space Gaswerk.
